56% of People Think Gun Violence Increased When It Actually Dropped
One of the biggest problems with the view on firearms today is the fact that people simply will not listen to facts, or they’re misinformed. A recent report from USA TODAY states that 56% of most Americans think that there has been an increase in gun crime, despite the consistent gun violence decline. Gun crimes have gone down over 75% in two decades, but for some reason, the masses feel differently.
Why is this happening?
Is it protesters or the media and social media?
Let’s start with Facebook; people often share before checking the facts. Here’s how it goes most of the time…. A protester makes a picture to get their point across, regardless if it’s true or not, and this picture says, “Gun Crime on the Rise; Ban Guns”. Well, let’s say another activist sees this post… and clicks share immediately. He or she won’t go to Snopes to fact check it since he or she feels so passionate about this topic, and now even more people can see and share the post. People remember moving stories that make them cry, not numbers released in a blog.
“The public doesn’t get its feelings out of crime statistics,” said Alfred Blumstein, an urban systems professor at Heinz College at Carnegie Mellon University. “The public gets its feelings from particularly notorious events, and what the press talks about.” | Read the Full Article Here
How can we change that? All we know is that we all have to do our best to raise awareness about the true statistics of gun crime in America. So we ask you, share this post on Facebook, and raise awareness about the truth. Be loud about this, people deserve to make decisions based off the correct information about guns.
